Westbury, NY- Triton Fights 3 brought the fans 10 action-packed bouts, including three title fights. The third installment of Triton Fights was headlined by a middleweight title bout, in which Jeremy Puglia (5-1) submitted Vincent DeRiso (6-3). In the co-main event, Clint Patterson did his best imitation of the ninja turtles as he tossed Eric Taylor into submission. Patterson exited the cage wearing the USMTA welterweight belt around his waist. Codie Payne (5-3), impressed the judges to a 30-27 unanimous decision on all three scorecards, defeating Michael Sanders (4-3) and claiming the Triton Fights lightweight title.
pUGLIA STEALS ARM OF DERISO
In the main event, Jeremy Puglia (Vamos BJJ) shifted the fight in his favor in the second round as he claimed the arm of DeRiso and wouldn’t return it. In round one, DeRiso (Bellmore Kickboxing) controlled the majority of the action as he used heavy pressure, forcing Puglia’s back against the cage. The entire first round was in a clinch, as both fighters fought for position.
At the start of round 2, DeRiso landed two heavy leg kicks. He followed the kicks with a monster takedown. After several strikes from the top, Puglia showed his strength and climbed back to his feet. DeRiso tried leaping onto his back for a choke. Puglia shook DeRiso off and hit him with an assault of punches. Puglia ended up on top and took DeRiso’s arm by force. Puglia submitted DeRiso via Arm Bar in Round two, at 2:35. Puglia is the New Triton Fights middleweight champion.
PATTERSON THROWS TAYLOR INTO SUBMISSION
The co-main event was a welterweight matchup for the USMTA title. Clint Patterson improved to 3-1 in his amateur career. He defeated Eric Taylor via Submission in round two. Inside the cage, Patterson demonstrated a high level of skills. The Class 1 MMA fighter used Taylor’s momentum in the first round to hit an Iranian arm throw. Patterson climbed into full mount and worked ground-and-pound for the remainder of the round. Round two, Patterson wasted little time to drag Taylor back to the canvas. Quickly, the man with the extraordinary mustache locked up a Leg Triangle in round two, forcing the referee to intervene at 1:11. Clint Patterson is the New USMTA welterweight champion.
PAYNE SHOWS QUEENS TOUGHNESS
In a lightweight featured bout, Codie Payne (5-3) defeated Michael Sanders (4-3) via Unanimous Decision. The Bellmore Kickboxer looked like a seasoned veteran inside the cage. Payne’s calm demeanor allowed his transitions to take place. Payne’s hard work and dedication at the gym was on full display as he used very technical wrestling to continually drag Sanders to the canvas. While on top, the Queens native poured on the strikes round after round. Friday night was by far the best version of Codie Payne we have seen thus far, which is scary for other fighters in his division. It only means he’ll continue to grow and improve within MMA. Payne earned a 30-27 score on all three judges’ scorecards. Fans can’t wait to see who Payne defends his Triton Fights title against.
NEW FLYWEIGHT CONTENDER
In a featured Flyweight bout on the main card, Danny Maldonado of Pure Heart MMA improved his winning streak to two with an impressive victory over UFC Gym – Staten Island’s Irvin Averbukh. Maldonado wasted zero time to utilize his wrestling skills with an early takedown. The Pure Heart dominated Averbukh so decisively that two judges scored one round 10-8. Maldonado set himself up perfectly for a title contention bout. Maldonado defeated Averbukh via Unanimous Decision by a score of 30-27, 30-26, 30-26.
The undercard was headlined by Black Hole BJJ/MMA fighter Meylis Charyyew defeated heavily crowd favorite Kareem Scott (Vamos BJJ). Charyyew land numerous shots to Scott before dropping him against the cage. Referee Kevin Mulhall called the action when he noticed Scott’s eyes drift off. Charyyew won his MMA debut verse the Vamos BJJ fighter with accurate striking.
Middleweight Ryan Gerena demonstrated excellent grappling and strength. The Vamos BJJ fighter powered his way thru to a unanimous decision. Gerena advanced to 2-0 in his amateur career and now can prepare for an advanced amateur MMA rules bout. David Rice of Renzo Gracie made his MMA debut a successful one after he defeated David Dubinsky by smothering him on the ground. Rice, a welterweight, also pushed his way to a unanimous decision victory at Triton Fights 3.
FIGHT OF THE NIGHT
Fight of the Night honors is awarded to the Giwston Sanchez (Mantra MMA) and Bobby Casale (Long Island MMA) fight. These two warriors exchanged numerous blows to each other and continually pressed forward throughout a three-round war. The crowd’s reaction to every strike landed by Casale and Sanchez echoed through the village of Westbury. Casale scored several takedowns throughout the bout. Sanchez attempted an Arm Bar submission that Casale fought off. If Casale was maybe able to score more punches from the top position or attempted a submission of his own from the top, the score might have been in his favor. The Long Island MMA fighter did have the majority of the control throughout rounds two and three.
A rematch after both fighters are under advanced amateur rules must be considered by Triton Fights matchmaker, Eugene Perez. The excitement the fight brought to the card was overwhelming. The quality of both young men was tremendous. They each should quality chins, talent, and most of all, heart. Expect these two lightweights to meet in the near future.
